Breaking the cycle of poverty

Action Lesotho’s goal

Action Lesotho is an Irish NGO whose aim is to bring much needed humanitarian and development aid from Ireland to the Kingdom of Lesotho. Our work is carried out in the spirit of service to others, by which we mean that all the work in Ireland, from board members to our committed volunteers, is carried out without payment or any financial reward. Nobody in Ireland draws a wage. This ensures the vast majority of your donations go to our projects on the ground in Lesotho and towards supporting our fully Basotho staff there.

Childhood Education and Wellbeing

Our Childhood Education and Wellbeing Programme is aimed at the poorest and most disadvantaged of the children in the community, many of them orphans and all of them vulnerable.

Through our programmes we aim to give these children as good a life-chance as any other child. Our support is offered through seven different programmes within this project.

Horticulture

The goal of our Horticulture Programme is to empower people living in poverty to grow their own vegetables in a way suited to their specific circumstances.  There are four types of vegetable garden we help create: sack gardens, keyhole gardens, household gardens and market gardens.

We have a horticulture centre in Phukalla where we carry out research, demonstrate vegetable-growing and deliver regular workshops.

Training for employment

In Lesotho, unemployment and lack of education condemn many young adults to a life of incessant hunger and poverty. One of the most effective ways to break this cycle is through our Training for Employment programme. A trained worker in long-term employment can sustainably raise not just themselves, but as many as eight other people, out of poverty.

Health and Nutrition

In Lesotho most adults and even many babies and infants do not get adequate nutrition due to poverty. Our Health and Nutrition programme provides weekly parcels of milk, sorghum porridge and peanut butter to each child.

How You Can Help

We rely entirely on donations of money, items and voluntary staffing to keep our projects in Lesotho running. There are many ways you can assist us in our work.
